Windies spinner Miller looks to England ODIs
LEFT-ARM orthodox slow bowler Nikita Miller is relishing the prospect of going up against England in the One-Day International (ODI) series, set to begin today at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
Miller, who joined on the limited-overs leg of the West Indies’ tour of New Zealand and performed admirably, before recently grabbing 2-30 off 10 overs in the lone ODI against Ireland at Sabina Park, said the Englishmen should pose a considerable challenge.
“England is a much tougher opponent (but) hopefully I can bring that sort of form that I’ve taken from New Zealand,” the 31-year-old said, while noting the importance of working with spin bowling coach Saqlain Mushtaq.
Mushtaq, the Pakistan spin bowling legend, was brought into the West Indies set-up after initially helping regional spinners at the High Performance Centre.
Miller said the West Indies have plenty of room for improvement after drawing the Twenty20 series 1-1 against the lowly rated Irish and then stuttering briefly in the run-chase before winning the ODI.
“We still can improve though we bowled well enough. We reach the target easily enough, but we lost a little bit too many wickets in the end there,” the Jamaican explained.
He said he was pleased about his return to Sabina Park with the regional team after an absence of several years.
“I haven’t played here since 2010 and was looking forward to this challenge. I think I bowled well enough to get the kind of figures that I had at the end there.
“Early on there was some sort of spin, but it wasn’t sharp spin. I had to dig deep and get most of the balls in the right areas to put them (the opposing batsmen) back under some sort of pressure,” Miller said.
