Gardening — March 2nd
Dear Orchid Doc:
Could you please help me in reviving a spiking Phalaenopsis orchid? The spike is approximately 4-inches long. It started out looking very healthy, but yesterday morning I noticed that the top seems dry. I’m not sure why, as I have been watering/feeding as usual. What can be done at this time?
A F Miller
Dear A Miller:
Without seeing the “patient ” my only guess is an insect. I would cut the bloom off, since you have already lost that, secure it in a bag and throw it in the garbage; these insects have a way of recycling if not disposed of properly.
Spray with Newmectin or Cure.
Take proper precautions and follow instructions carefully.
Dear Orchid Doc:
Can I put my Strapleaf Vanda in a pot?
D Edwards
Dear D Edwards
The Strapleaf Vandas like to have their roots exposed. Orchids are air feeders and prefer if you don’t pot them too much. I would not advise it, but if you must, leave some of the roots hanging on the outside. It might be a better idea to put it on a log.
