Lawgiver to lay down new set
RASTAFARIAN singjay Lawgiver is anticipating musical success from his upcoming mixtape titled Audio Check.
“This track will leave the listeners feeling elevated as it highlights the strength of a person’s survival, even when a person’s back is way against the wall. It is one that everyone can relate to and I think it will be a musical anthem,” Lawgiver told the Jamaica Observer.
Recorded in Kenya, the 21-track tape is scheduled for release in March. The set is co-produced by Kenya’s DJ Partoh on the Empire Sound System label.
Among its listing is the inspirational track Higher We Rise (featuring Brilli), Oneness, and Alive and Kicking (featuring veteran artiste Half Pint).
The 35-year-old, whose given name is Oneil Phoenix, said he developed a passion for music as a youngster while growing up in St Mary.
“I would compete in musical clashes with other young men from the community using imitation microphones moulded from clay. Also, watching my father spinning vinyl records on Sundays was my favourite pasttime. As soon as my Daddy touched that record box, I also got myself ready to go, because there was no leaving me behind,” he reminisced.
After graduating from Islington High School, he came to Kingston, which offered greater opportunities for a budding entertainer.
“It was at Mixing Lab Studio that I met Bounty Killer. He was responsible for the single Bad Smell, done on the Scare Dem label. At that time I went by the stage name Dyce Di Lawgiver,” he said.
Since then he has released tracks including Nuh Greedy, Nuh Touch It, and So Nice to See.
