Savannah look to go top in St James football
FROME, Westmoreland — Former champions Savannah SC could take over the lead in the points table in the Jamaica Football Federation Captain’s Bakery and Grill/ Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League today when they take on last-placed Norwood Strikers in their return-round game at Frome, starting at 3:30 pm.
With leaders Reno FC out of action until Tuesday, second-placed Savannah SC, who trail Reno by two points, 27-29, and have a game in hand, could assume the lead if they can beat Norwood Strikers for a second time this season after their 1-0 win in Montego Bay in the first round.
In other games today, third-placed Sandals Whitehouse and fourth-placed Tomorrow’s People will meet at Crocs Land, Granville United travel to Duanvale in Trelawny; defending champions Wadadah FC and Village United will meet at the UDC field, while Holland United host a newly confident Lucea FC at Elliston Wakeland Centre.
At Frome, Savannah SC, the only unbeaten team in the competition, should be the new leaders after today as they take on a Norwood Strikers team that has been on a downward spiral since December.
Norwood have earned just a point in their last 10 games, conceding 27 goals in the process and could be at the mercy of a Savannah SC team that has allowed just seven goals so far this season.
Sandals Whitehouse had beaten Tomorrow’s People in the first round in Montego Bay and hope to make it two wins against the beaten mid-season finalist, who have not won since the start of the second round, losing three straight since being blanked 3-0 by Reno in the mid-season final.
The slump has seen Tomorrow’s People drop to fourth in the standing, tied with Granville United on 21 points, but Granville have a game in hand.
Tomorrow’s People will be desperate for a win but will face a confident Sandals Whitehouse whose only loss at home was to Reno FC, a defeat they have since avenged.
Granville will have their eyes set on a top-four position for the first time this season when they travel to Duanvale FC, seeking to avenge a first-round loss in a game they dominated.
Granville United have only won once outside of St James this season, at Lucea in the first round and must prove themselves today at Duanvale.
Defending champions Wadadah FC were ambushed 2-1 by Lucea FC mid-week and will be seeking not just to get back to winning ways, but also to drag themselves back into contention, having slipped to seventh place in the points table, only two off the top four places.
