Buff Bay take narrow lead at Eastern Champs
DEFENDING champions Buff Bay High are narrowly ahead of Oberlin High on the first day of the 2014 Eastern Secondary Schools Sports Association (ESSSA)/Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium, yesterday.
The school from Portland coached by Everton Leslie has amassed a combined boys’ and girls’ total of 148 points, just ahead by four points over former many-time champions Oberlin, who are on 144 points.
Following the two top leaders in the points standing are St Mary High with 111 points, Glengoffe High, 69, Titchfield High, 43, Morant Bay High, 33, Yallahs High, 32, Seaforth High, 30, St Thomas Technical, 23, and Tacky High with 22 points to round out the top 10.
Meanwhile, Tameria Howell of St Mary captured the Class Three girls’ 1,500 metres with a time 5:09.52 minutes, while the Class Two girls’ 1,500m final was won by Shavel Brown of Tacky in a time of 5:12.53 minutes, and the Class One equivalent won by Anniesha Black of Glengoffe in 5:09.71 minutes.
Romaine Moore of Buff Bay was the winner of the Class Three boys’ 1,500m final in 4:42.19 minutes, Jevanney Leslie won the Class Two boys’ 1,500m final in 4:20.61 minutes, with the Class One event going to David Rojohn in 4:03.51 minutes.
The Class One girls’ high jump final was won by Nicole Thompson of Glengoffe with a leap of 1.65 metres. Shaday Anderson of Oberlin won the Class Two girls’ high jump with 1.63m, with the Class Three event going to Rushelle Jones of Buff Bay with 1.60 metres.
Ellika Lane of Glengoffe captured the girls’ Class Four long jump with 4.79 metres, while Trishauna Hemmings of Glengoffe won the Class Two equivalent with 5.40 metres. The girls’ Class One and Class Three finals will be held today.
The boys’ Class One long jump was won by Gavin Montaque of St Mary High with 6.78 metres, Dimitri Drysdale won the Class Two event with 6.61m. The Class Three final will be today.
Eric Campbell of Oberlin won the Class One boys’ discus throw with 32.24m, while Jonaire Thompson of Oberlin captured the Class Two event with 34.32m. Raphana Brown won the Class Two girls’ discus throw with 32.24 metres.
A total of 60 finals will be contested on today’s final day, which begins at 9:00 am.
