Shot-putter Brown looks ahead
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Jamaican shot-putter Raymond Brown was just hours away from fulfilling one of his dreams at the IAAF World Championships last year in Moscow, but he tore a tendon in his throwing arm while warming up on a cool morning.
Though the injury was not a major one — a first degree tear — it was enough to keep him out of competition, delaying his dreams.
Brown has since recovered, and after his best -ever opening throw of 19.33m at the Youngster Goldsmith meet in Kingston on February 1, he is eagerly anticipating his next outing at the March 22 UWI Classics.
The former Bridgeport High thrower told the Jamaica Observer recently, he was over the injury setback and recovering well.
“The injury is OK now, I am still ‘rehabbing’ and working with the physio at GC Foster…. but (I am)not feeling any pain.”
Brown was still working towards full fitness and said “I would not say I am full 100 (per cent fit) but (I am) getting there.”
Brown’s goal this season, he said, is not just a place on the Commonwealth Games team, but a place on the podium, and his opening throw was well over the 18.90m qualifying standard for the Games that will be hosted by Glasgow, Scotland, in July-August later this yea.
“My main goal this year is to make it to the Commonwealth Games, qualify for the final and to medal,” he said.
