Local-based trio makes way for England quartet
CHRISTCHURCH, Barbados — The Reggae Boyz trio of Dicoy Williams, Nicholi Finlayson and Hughan Gray left here yesterday for Jamaica to make way for four players who will join the squad for the friendly game versus hosts St Lucia tomorrow.
The quartet, who play football professionally in England, are Reading’s wide attacker Garath McCleary, Leeds United’s midfielder Rodolph Austin, and defenders Adrian Mariappa and Wes Morgan of Crystal Palace and Leicester City, respectively.
Another Reading attacker, Jobi McAnuff, was also set to join the squad for the St Lucia clash on the FIFA-approved friendly date, but he suffered a concussion in club training and has remained in England.
On Sunday night, Finlayson, Gray and Williams played in Jamaica’s 2-0 friendly victory over Barbados at the National Stadium here.
Head coach Winfried Schaefer had previously said that all players would be assessed before a decision is taken as to who would make way for the England-based players.
Yesterday, his newly-appointed assistant Miguel Coley told the Jamaica Observer that the choice was not necessarily performance-based.
“The decision was made position-wise. We have midfielders coming in… and central defenders. Those players who left got an opportunity, though probably not enough for Gray and Dicoy Williams, but we looked at Finlayson and he had a good game.
“It’s not only about performance, but we are giving players the opportunity and those players are still part of our plans,” Coley said.
Finlayson started the Barbados game at centre-half and was replaced by Williams in the 89th minute, while Gray entered the game at right-back in the 85th.
