Knibb’s Shavaunghn Reid cops ISSA/KFC Under-19 MVP title
SHAVAUNGHN Reid was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the final of the ISSA/KFC all-island boys’ Under-19 basketball competition, after he led William Knibb Memorial High to a historic win, beating Jamaica College 66-58 at the National Stadium, last Thursday.
Reid had a game high 28 points and 10 rebounds as he led the Martha Brae, Trelawny- school, to their first ever all-island sporting title. They also became the first western- based high school to win a boys basketball title.
In the other game played, Western Conference runners- up Muschett High beat Belair High 62-33 for third place.
Previously, the Muschett High girls team had created history when they won the national title two years ago to become the first team from the region to be crowned champions after Herbert Morrison Under- 19 boys had failed two times.
Last Thursday, Daniel Henry also had a double-double for William Knibb with 11 points and 11 assists; Alwayne Smith also scored 13 points and Don-Michael Fray scored 12 points.
Meanwhile, the regional awards were also handed out on Thursday.
Reid won the award for being the top scorer in the Under-19 competition; Holland High’s Kenrick Lindo won the award for free throws and Hugh Smith was the top three points shooter; Muschett High’s Karlington Barrett was the top rebounder, while his teammate Michael Schloss was tops in assists. Spot Valley High’s Alwayne Newsome had most blocks and Herbert Morrison’s Ralique Grant had the most steals.
Under -16 champions Spot Valley High had two regional awards- Desran Harris was the top scorer, while Jhamonique Brown had the most free throws; three Herbert Morrison players also picked up awards- Breandan Dawkins had the most three points baskets, Akeem Davidson had the most rebounds while, Adrian Spence had the most blocks. Cornwall College’s Giovanni Bailey had the most steals.
