Counterfeit cigarettes on the market, Carreras cautions
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Cigarette manufacturers Carreras on Friday urged consumers to check their cigarette packs as attempts are being made to sell counterfeit Craven ‘A’ cigarettes.
According to Carreras, the counterfeit cigarette packs can be identified by the following best before dates and accompanying product codes that can be found on the bottom side panel in gold on each cigarette pack:
• November 22, 2013 — 870222140757
• February 19, 2014 — 870222145213
• July 18, 2014 — 870222140368
• August 13, 2014 — 870222140368
“We wish to remind the public that the illicit trade in cigarettes not only hurts the Company, but it also denies the Government of well-needed revenue from taxes authorised by law, and deprives the National Health Fund of revenues,” Carreras said in a news release.
The company also cautioned that it could not attest to the safety and quality of counterfeit products.
In the meantime, Carreras urged the relevant law enforcement agencies to increase their “vigilance and continue its efforts in clamping down on the presence of illicit cigarettes”.
