C’Bar’s Russell, Vere’s Dixon best of the best
DEJOUR Russell of boys’ champions Calabar High School and Vere Technical’s Britnie Dixon — both Class Three athletes — were the overall points champions at last week’s 104th ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships held at the National Stadium.
Russell, with gold in the 100m hurdles and second-place finishes in the 100m and long jump events, scored 23 individual points to top the boys’ section, while Dixon won the Class Three 800m/1,500m double and was third in the 3,000m Open for 24 points.
Calabar High, who romped to their third straight and 24th title, had two of the three boys’ champions with Rajay Hamilton taking Class One with 18 points, while Cornwall College’s Warren Barrett and St Elizabeth Technical’s Jauavney James tied for Class Two honours, both with 18 points.
In the girls’ section, Hydel had two class champions — Shiann Salmon in Class Three with 20 points and Ashanti Moore in Class Four; Manchester High Annastacia Forrester won Class Two with 18 points, while Edwin Allen’s Marleena Eubanks was the Class One champion with 18 points.
Calabar swept the top three places in Class Three with Tyreke Wilson, who broke the records in the 100m and 200m, taking second with 18 points, and Christopher Taylor third with 16 points.
Barrett, who won Cornwall College’s first gold medal at Champs in almost 20 years when he broke the record in the Class Two shot put and won the discus throw, tied with James, who won the 800m/1,500m double, both on 18 points, with St Jago’s Raheem Chambers and Kingston College’s Jhevaughn Matherson both scoring 16 points.
Hamilton won Class One, beating Bog Walk High’s Jevaughn Minzie, Jamaica’s fastest ever schoolboy, after he ran 10.16 seconds for second in the 100m behind Kingston College’s Anguillan Zharnel Hughes, and Jamaica College’s Clayton Brown, both of whom had 16 points each.
Also in the overall points classification, Obrien Frith of Holmwood Technical, who won the 200m steeplechase and 5,000m open, and Wolmer’s Boys’ Jaheel Hyde, who won the 400m hurdles open in a new national junior record 49.49 seconds, and the Class One 110m hurdles, also scored 18 points each.
In the girls’ overall tally, Holmwood Technical’s Shanieke Watson scored 23 points, while Edwin Allen’s Claudette Allen, and Vere Technical’s Sasha-gay Whyte, also scored 20 points each.
Eubanks, who won the 800/1,500m double in supreme fashion to close out her Champs career, topped the Class One points table followed by Wolmer’s Girls’ 200m champion Jonielle Smith, and Edwin Allen’s shot put record holder Rochelle Frazer with 16 points each.
Manchester High’s Forrester scored 18 points in Class Two to edge out St Jago’s Nattaliah Whyte, and Edwin Allen’s Jannell Fullerton, both of whom scored 16 points each.
Salmon, who broke the Class Three high jump record with a 1.78m clearance, scored 20 points as her teammate Yanique Dayle, and Vere’s Dixon scored 18 points in Class Three.
Moore of Hydel had 19 points to top Class Four, one point ahead of Convent of Mercy’s sprint double champion Kiara Grant on 18 points, and Kayla Bonnick of St Jago, who got 13 points.
