Intercol Track & Field Championship off today
A possible rematch between the vastly improving Rusheen McDonald of UTech and defending champion and Intercol record holder Nicholas Maitland of UWI in the 400m will be a highlight when the Intercol Championships 2014 kicks off today at the UWI Usain Bolt Track.
The day’s action will be highlighted by the much anticipated clash between former Central American and Caribbean Games 100m Champion Andrew Fisher of UTech, and fast-rising star Jason Young, the fifth fastest in the world over 200m in 2013, representing UWI in the men’s 100m.
In addition to the much anticipated duel between McDonald and Maitland in the 400m, the likes of Natasha Morrison, Former World Youth and Junior champion Fredrick Dacres, veteran Raymond Brown along with 2013 IAAF World Championship participant for Great Britain Delano Williams are also expected to bring their own brand of fireworks.
Dacres is fresh off his performance at the Texas Relays, where he posted a world-leading distance in the discus of 66.75 metres. Dacres could very well use the Intercol Championships to inch closer or even break Jason Morgan’s national record of 67.15 metres.
Rashid Hall, second vice-president of the Intercollegiate Sports Association says he expects the athletes to perform exceptionally well, especially those seeking to make the Commonwealth Games team.
“The Intercol Championships will be a great fusion of sport and entertainment and the platform is set for the athletes to showcase their talents on the big stage. We are now putting the finishing touches to ensure our athletes, patrons and supporters have a wonderful atmosphere to participate in,” he said.
Off track, Saturday will also feature the Intercollegiate Cheerleading Championships. The cheerleading competition promises to deliver quality routines, filled with flips, flexibility, strength and agility all done in cohesive fluent styles. Over the years, the cheerleading competition has attracted much interest, as several youngsters look forward to the annual event.
