Basil Dawkins encourages students to get involved in theatre
JAMAICAN playwright Basil Dawkins has encouraged students to become involved in theatre and arts which he says will help them become well-rounded individuals.
Speaking at an interactive session put on by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) on World Theatre Day celebrated globally on March 27, Dawkins said he was inspired to enter theatre by his mother in order to help his growth and development.
“There is room for successful theatre practitioners in Jamaica; however, you have to be at the top of your game,” he said.
In offering his advice to the aspiring actors and playwrights, Dawkins told the eager participants that in order to improve their playwriting skills, they have to write frequently in addition to reading scripts and watching plays of other playwrights. He advised the participants to always do their best and not to listen to any negatives that may deter them. Dawkins also encouraged the participants to get involved in creative writing which will help them in other areas of their lives.
Dawkins lauded the JCDC for celebrating World Theatre Day. The playwright welcomed numerous questions on his life, inspiration, work and experiences, and gave solid advice to the participants on how to develop their talents and interests.
World Theatre Day was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and is celebrated annually on March 27 by ITI centres and the international theatre community.
