WINDWARD ROAD have taken the early lead with 39 points after four finals at the end of yesterday’s first day of the three-day Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Junior High, All-Age and Primary Schools Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium.

Defending champions John Mills come next with 37.50 points, followed by Cockburn Gardens, 23.30, Louise Bennett-Coverly, 16, Calabar All-Age, 14, New Day, 12, Shortwood Practising, five, Mico Practising, three, and Swallowfield with two points.

It will be very interesting on today’s second day which is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am. Seven finals are scheduled to be completed today.

Meanwhile, Tyrese Markland of John Mills captured the boys’ Class Three long jump with a winning leap of 4.95 metres from Teyhran Campbell of New Day with 4.58m, and Maleke Bramwell of Windward Road with 4.49m.

Ananna Wallace of Windward Road won the Class Two girls’ long jump with 4.66 metres, from Timira Wilson of Cockburn Gardens with 4.62m, and Shamara James of Louise Bennett-Coverley, with 4.51 metres.

Ramona Hylton of Calabar won the Class Three equivalent with 1.50 metres from Tatyana Crawford of John Mills with 1.35m, and Rasheedah of Cockburn Gardens who leapt 1.25 metres.

Tijuana Constantine of John Mills captured the Class One girls’ high jump final with a leap of 1.50 metres from Hadiya Gray of John Mills (1.48m), and Brandy Cole of Windward Road (1.44 metres).

So far things are looking pretty good for champions John Mills and their arch-rivals Windward Road as they have qualified for most of the 100 metres finals.

In the Class One boys’ 100 metres heats, Tyrese Francis of John Mills has recorded the fastest time of 12.01 seconds to lead his opponents into the final scheduled for tomorrow. He will be challenged, however, by Garfield Waggon of Calabar, who ran 12.16 seconds.

Krissancia Sang of John Mills will lead the Class One girls’ 100m finalists after running the fastest time in the heats of 13.18secs with Nastacia McKenzie of Windward Road her main danger with 13.28 seconds.

Kashaun Smith of Swallowfield has recorded the fastest time in the Class Two boys’ 100m heats with a time of 12.39 seconds, with Matthew Hamilton of John Mills having recorded 12.41 seconds, and Coyde Anderson of Swallowfield (12.48 seconds).

The three leading times going into the finals in the Class Two girls were done by Adanna Wallace of Windward Road (13.38 seconds), Teana Martin of White Marl (13.59), and Shevonne Chambers of Windward Road with 13.60 seconds.

The seven finals scheduled today are Class Two boys’ high jump, Class One girls’ long jump, shot put open for girls, Class Three boys’ high jump, Class One boys’ high jump, and the 1,500 metres open for boys and girls.
