Revenge-seeking Four Paths tackle Treadlight in Major League final
HAYES, Clarendon — The Jamalco Sports Club will be the venue as the Clarendon Captain’s Bakery Major League climaxes today with the eagerly anticipated championship game between Treadlight and Four Paths.
Kick-off is set for 3:30 pm, with outgoing champions Jamalco scheduled to play Kemps Hill two hours earlier in the third-place decider.
Despite this being their first-ever appearance in a Major League final, Treadlight will start as favourites. They have not only had the measure of Four Paths this season; they have also been the most impressive team in the competition to date.
The central Clarendon side tallied the most points, scored the most goals and had the best goal difference in the preliminary round – which saw them topping Zone Two, ahead of Four Paths, en route to the semi-finals. But despite being such a free-scoring unit in the prelims – losing only once – they actually saved their best performance for the semi-final round where they thrashed Kemps Hill 6-0 on aggregate.
Going up against Four Paths, they are now bubbling with confidence, knowing that they were responsible for two of the three defeats that their opponents suffered in the earlier rounds, winning 1-0 at home and 2-1 in the reverse fixture. But, even with such an envious record, only a fool would be quick to write off Four Paths’ chances of regaining top spot in the parish.
Admittedly, the south-west Clarendon side might not necessarily be at their best this season, but this is a route that they have travelled before with much success.
In fact, it was only two seasons ago that they upstaged then title favourites Jamalco to win this very competition and, even though the adage says that “lightning never strikes twice in the same place” – it could very well happen again.
On their way to the final, Four Paths turned in a number of big performances to save their season which, at the halfway stage, appeared destined for a relegation battle. The most memorable of those performances was a 1-0 win over no other than Jamalco – who were again the title favourites – in the semi-finals.
They will now set out to avenge those two earlier defeats against Treadlight with renewed energy and confidence, knowing that a win will give them the Captain’s Bakery trophy and a sizeable cash prize.
Even more importantly, however, a victory, here in south-east Clarendon, will give them a much coveted place alongside Jamalco in the South Central Confederation Super Eight play-off.
