Talented Tony K — The Lotto Classic Governor
The run for the Lotto Classic (Governor’s Cup) was a real humdinger. The precocious talent of Talented Tony K was tested by the stamina of Relampago. In a race for the ages, the final declaration was a nail-biting finish involving the two thoroughbreds and in the end it was decided by a margin of a short head. So close, yet so far, yet this is racing. The team from the Complete Racing Guide gives their analysis of this enthralling race.
THE ANALYSIS
Talented Tony K — A truly great performance of grit, determination and talent. Talented Tony K has improved even further since his April win in the 2,000 Guineas and credit must go to his young trainer Lorne Kirlew. He is not an out and out stayer but he packs enough class and talent to beat his peers at the longer trips. Received a truly superb ride from jockey Shane Ellis who demonstrated wise thinking in waiting patiently before making a decisive move. Ellis’ riding in the big races is now undeniable. This year Ellis has already won the Jamaica Oaks on Raeven Renae and now the Lotto Classic. Ellis made all the difference in Talented Tony K winning the Governor’s Cup. Talented Tony K now has three weeks to prepare for the Derby (12 furlongs) where he should again do well.
Relampago — Always seems to occupy the bridesmaid position although losing by a short margin in the Lotto Classic. Did exceptionally well under a good ride from Dick Cardenas. Trainer Anthony Nunes can take comfort in the fact that the extra two furlongs of the Derby will definitely be to the liking of Relampago. He is coming along well and the Derby may represent his best option of winning a big race. And for sure Nunes knows how to prepare Derby winners. It is going to be very interesting.
Rocketman — Well-backed going into the Lotto Classic and although was waited on by his jockey Winston Griffiths simply did not have the torque to overhaul the winner and was always going to finish behind Relampago. Might enjoy the 12 furlongs of the Derby but it will take some improvement to beat Talented Tony K and Relampago.
Bubbling Angeline — Again could not find the requisite stamina to compete effectively against the colts and going beyond a mile. Continues to earn a share of the major prizes but it is now clear she must be confined to sprinting in the main.
Israelite — Did surprisingly well to earn a share of the purse although was despised in the betting. Will probably not compete effectively beyond the Overnight Allowance level.
Bars of Gold — It is becoming clearer and clearer that Bars of Gold cannot handle the main three-year-old players at any distance.
Franfield — Always highly thought of when going long but against the best of his batch Franfield is finding it too difficult to be truly competitive.
Bold Aviator — Entered the Lotto Classic after a good win at the non-winners of two level but found nothing going against the leaders in his group. Still Bold Aviator might progress – all is not lost.
Gaga Lady — Was never a winning factor racing at this level and should continue this path.
Sparkling Michaela — Again made her presence felt for a while by leading the first half of the race. Then her effort petered out. This now appears to be her main target – leading in the big races before dropping out.
Da Jackal — Will benefit from the run for future engagements.
Butler Cabin — Not ready for this type of competition as yet.
Xquisite Choice — Should have stayed home although the run might prove invigorating.
