BRED in Jamaica by Everglades Farm Limited located in Trelawny, Momentum (Western Classic – Sea Treaty) maintained his unbeaten run and remained on track for Triple Crown glory with an impressive runaway victory in yesterday’s (last Friday) 1,900-metre Carib Brewery Midsummer Classic–middle leg of the Triple Crown–at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.

Sent off as the heavy 1/5 favourite, the Dr Rupert Indar Jnr – owned scored unchallenged under Brian Boodramsingh. He came home by a widening 11 1/4 lengths from 35/1 outsider Eye See You, while Justcallmebas and High Octane filled the minor places, to claim the winner’s share of TT$270,000. The winning time was 2:02.1 minutes.

Having taken the first leg of the Triple Crown, the 1,800-metre NLCB Easter Guineas last month, the John O’Brien trainee’s final stop on the Triple Crown path is the 2,000-metre Trinidad Derby Stakes on September 24. O’Brien, who has missed out completing the triple on a number of occasions, could finally achieve the feat this year.

Asked if the pressure of completing the Triple Crown is weighing on him, Boodramsingh said: “Let’s keep our fingers crossed. I understand the Jamaicans are coming in for the race, but they have to bring something really good.”

O’Brien added: “He’s coming on well. He has the right things, speed and stamina. Hopefully we will get a race in before the Derby.” Owner Dr Indar chipped in, “Very nice feeling, but we have four months still ahead of us. I know a couple nice Jamaica-bred horses are coming, and they will make it a nice race.”

Leaving the start in rain, Eye See You was hustled to the front in the nine-runner Grade One feature with Momentum in close proximity. The pace was slowed to a modest pace, with quarter-mile fractions of 25.3; 51.4; 1:17. Racing up the backstretch, Momentum eyeballed Eye See You and cruised to the front nearing the 800-metre marker before gradually asserting. Thereafter the race resembled a procession.
