115-pound yam: Trelawny farmer believes he is highly blessed
CAREY PARK, Trelawny – Seventy-two-year-old farmer Herbert Bell, affectionately called ‘Mass B’, has every reason to believe he is highly blessed.
Two years ago he yielded 114 pounds of Renta yam from one yam hill in his backyard garden in Carey Park, and this year he surpassed that achievement when he harvested 115 pounds from a nearby hill.
“Mi never know that lightning would strike twice, but when mi see it mi sey King Bank again,” a smiling Bell told the Jamaica Observer West.
“I had to clap my hands and say thank you Jesus because is only You can bear so much.”
He disclosed that no fertiliser was used in the cultivation of the yam that was planted just 10 months ago.
A proud-looking Bell, who was the all-island champion goat farmer at the Denbigh Agricultural Show last year, stressed that he has shared all the tubers harvested in 2012 with family members and friends. This year, he intends to do the same.
In fact, he attributes his blessings to his generosity.
“I am a champion goat farmer, but I love farming on a whole. I plant my little backyard garden and boy, God bless me. I have a gungo peas plant and the first time it bear, my wife Dorothy reaped 30 pounds. And she go back and pick again,” Bell declared.
“And we never sell none; we just give friends and eat for ourselves. We get blessing from giving. Blessings follow you when you give to others.”
