Do-or-die as Spain meet Chile today
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The second round of matches in the World Cup group stage began Tuesday, June 17, with CONCACAF’s Mexico holding the mighty Brazil to a goalless draw. That the Mexicans kept what is traditionally regarded as the world’s most potent attacking team goalless is credit to their performance on the day.
Second round group matches continue today with Australia coming up against Netherlands in Group B at 11:00 am (Jamaica time).
Fresh off the 5-1 demolition of world champions and FIFA number 1 ranked Spain, the Dutch are expected to use this match as a warm up for the next stage of the tournament.
Also in Group B, round 2, embarrassed Spain take on Chile in a game they could use to justify their world champion rating. Another defeat for Spain would pile more humiliation on the heroes of the last World Cup with them exiting in the group stage.
Chile, one of the tournament’s dark horses, defeated Australia 3-1 in their first match and need only a draw to maintain second spot in the group.
Kickoff time for this do-or-die game is 4:00 pm local time (2:00pm in Jamaica; 3:00pm in New York; 8:00pm in London)
In Group A, beaten first round teams Croatia and Cameroon face off at 5:00 pm (Jamaica time). Mexico and Brazil hold top positions in the group and are likely to be the two to progress into the second stage.
