All star cast for RallySprint
THE Drivers RallySport Club (DRC) TruJuice RallySprint at Bybrook, Bog Walk in St Catherine, on Sunday, is primed for excitement as several of Jamaica’s top racers will be out in force.
“The TruJuice RallySprint is a good kick off to the dirt season. Fans love the sideways action, while drivers will use it as early prep for Rally Jamaica,” Wayne Piper, DRC president, told Auto.
The event is the second round of the DRC Sprint Championship and will be run in reverse through the Bybrook orange groves to juice things up a bit over last year’s event
“Bybrook offers a wonderful viewing experience. We’re moving everything to the top of the hill so spectators can watch and enjoy the food and drink on sale. Later, if they wish, the river is open for them to cool off,” Piper said.
The sprint has already attracted the attention of ‘heavyweights’ like Joel Jackson, Kyle Gregg and Matthew Gore. Jackson missed out on the 2013 Rallysport to Daryl King and promised not to let it slip by this year.
“The engine has been refreshed and all worn parts changed,” Jackson said about his Subaru Impreza WRX STi.
With the 2014 title in his eyes, Jackson’s only worry is Gregg who’s bringing a fresh Lancer Evolution IX to make his four-wheel drive debut on the loose surface.
“It’s going to scary, but I’m using this event as a learning curve for Rally Jamaica at the end of the year,” Gregg said.
Gore is also out for blood after being denied victory at last Sunday’s tarmac sprint in Montego Bay. While his regular rival King isn’t confirmed for entry, he will have to deal with another young hungry talent in the two-wheel drive class, Fraser McConnell.
McConnell, a karter, has slowly been making his transition to rallying after competing at last year’s sprint at this very same venue. After putting in some impressive times, his car succumbed to mechanical failure.
“I’ll be back in the Mitsubishi Mirage MIVEC I used last year and my first goal is to finish the event and to also continue my personal best,” McConnell said.
