JUVENILE BOOST
The two-year-old season got a well needed shot in the arm when the
first progeny of stallion Forest Danger, Forest Flame got the better of
seasoned rivals to win a 600 metres event on the St Leger programme
last Saturday at Caymanas Park. Forest Flame with Romario
Saunders in the saddle shot from the four draw and although pressed
by Gold Screw and Kesteen kept on to win by a length. Forest Flame
is conditioned by Wayne Parchment. Always good to see new entrants
to racing.
CHANGE OF EQUIPMENT DOES THE TRICK AGAIN
How often do we see this happening when a change of equipment
makes the difference between winning and losing? Such was the
case on Saturday with three-year-old Miss Emily. After four tries,
trainer Spencer Chung made the change that was necessary for the
filly to win by removing the tongue tie from his charge. Ridden by
Dick Cardenas, Miss Emily has to withstand the furious challenge of
Bad Boy Justin (Shane Ellis) for much of the stretch drive, coming
home by a nose. Both riders ended up in the winners’ enclosure as
they were both uncertain as to who had won. Although the time of
1:17:1 minutes was not impressive, what the race indicated was the
important role equipment continues to play when used correctly.
Congrats to the connections.
A FINE DOUBLE FOR SPENCER CHUNG
On Saturday last, trainer Spencer Chung gave a gentle reminder of
his conditioning skills with a spanking double, Miss Emily (Dick
Cardenas) and Go Go Yvonne (Dane Nelson). Miss Emily (Legal
Process-Lady Pakeezah) just got the better of Bad Boy Justin (Shane
Ellis) by a nose over 1,200 metres, while, Go Go Yvonne (Bandini –
Known Heiress) came with a storming run to beat Prince Andrew
(Percy Williams) in an Overnight Allowance event over 1,400 metres.
The win on Go Go Yvonne must have been a pleasing one for the
trainer as the six-year-old bay mare just failed to catch El Poderoso in
the Thoroughbred Hall Of Fame Stakes Trophy on June 7 on her last
outing over 1,200 metres.
WALKER QUICKLY FINDS A FAMILIAR PLACE
Jockey Omar Walker knows where the winners’ enclosure at
Caymanas Park is located having been champion jockey on four
occasions. Walker who is currently riding in Canada with much
success returned to the Park on Saturday with the main aim of riding
Talented Tony K in the St Leger. Before he mounted his St Leger
mount, Walker a winner on only his second ride for the day. His win
came when he guided the Fitzgerald Richards-trained Never Give Up
to victory in a driving finish over Saga Boy and Alisonbee going over
1,300 metres. Walker was not as lucky in the St Leger as Talented
Tony K ended in fourth position.
