Asafa, Sherone not cleared by CAS, handlers say
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former World Record holder Asafa Powell and his former training partner Sherone Simpson have not been cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) his handlers have revealed.
On Tuesday’s sports news on local television station CVM, it was reported that both had been cleared of doping offenses.
However Powell’s publicist Tara Playfair-Scott said in a release earlier Wednesday that this was not so “any reports of the athletes’ previous sanction being overturned by CAS are premature and in fact unofficial” the release said.
The release added: “Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson completed their appeal hearings yesterday, July 8th, 2014 in New York before The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The appeal was filed was against the 18th month sanction issued by JADCO earlier this year on April 10, 2014. Both athletes are more than satisfied with the process and patiently await the CAS panel’s decision.
Meanwhile under the stay issued by CAS on June 18, 2014 both athletes are allowed to compete professionally until the final decision is handed down. Sherone Simpson will next race this Saturday July 12th at the Gulden Sporen meet in Kortrijk, Belgium in both the 100m and 200m.
