Dear Editor,

I am enlightened by the views of some of my fellow Jamaicans as they relate to the mass rally which was held on Sunday, June 29, 2014 by the Church protesting against what they describe as the ‘gay agenda’ and the retention of the buggery law.

The remarks of many were that the Church was being hypocritical. They also questioned why the Church was not protesting against child abuse, rape, poverty, corruption, unemployment, devaluation of the dollar, fornication, adultery and other more ‘important issues’.

My questions for the critics are: what are you doing about child abuse, corruption, fornication, adultery, poverty, etc? Why don’t you protest against them? Who are you to determine what the Church should protest about?

I would like to know why the gay community is so interested in the repealing of the buggery law since there are more ‘important issues’? Why doesn’t the gay community protest against corruption, poverty, rape, child abuse, etc? Poverty doesn’t affect gays? Corruption doesn’t affect gays? Devaluation of the dollar doesn’t affect gays? Child abuse doesn’t affect gays? Unemployment doesn’t affect gays?

Do you think I can tell J-FLAG what to advocate? Do you think I can determine what J-FLAG should consider as important? How it is that nobody is writing letters to the editor telling J-FLAG that there are more ‘important issues’ than repealing the buggery law? Is it because they did not have a mass rally?

They can call us (the Church) hypocrites as much as they want, say whatever they like, but at least the hypocrites are standing up for their beliefs. So what about the ‘non-hypocrites’, what are they doing? Why not show the ‘hypocrites’ where the focus should be? Why not show the ‘hypocrites’ what they should really protest about? Stop the babbling and start doing something.

Don’t tell the Church what to do, show the Church what to do. If you know what to do and you are not doing it, how are you better than those you claim should be doing it? Show the ‘hypocrites’ how to not be hypocrites, or else you are no better.

Until they start doing what they claim we (the Church) should be doing, then I strongly suggest they keep their mouths shut! As mi granny use to seh: “Watch kettle a cuss pot.”
