Barbadian Jones wins long jump gold
EUGENE, Oregon (CMC) — Barbadian Akela Jones produced a sterling performance to win the women’s long jump at the IAAF World Junior Championships here Wednesday.
The 19-year-old measured 6.34 metres on her second jump to beat out her competition on day two of the championship at Hayward Field and confirm herself as the finest jumper in the world at the junior level.
“It’s amazing to be the best in the world. I’ve been training for this for the last two years, longer than that,” said Jones.
“It’s an epic moment. That’s the only word for it: epic. Hayward Field has a good atmosphere. The fans are so into the competition and so knowledgeable. It’s amazing.”
Jones, who has long dominated at Carifta level, finished ahead of Norway’s Nadia Akpana Assa, who measured 6.31m, and Germany’s Maryse Luzolo, who copped bronze with 6.24m.
However, the Caribbean endured no such success in the men’s 100 metres final where all three Caribbean entrants finished outside of the medals.
Barbadian Levi Cadogan was fourth in 10.39 seconds, while Antigua and Barbuda’s Cejhae Greene finished fifth in 10.43 seconds.
Trinidadian Jonathan Farinha was last in 10.47 seconds.
The race was won by American Kendall Williams, who clocked a personal best 10.21 seconds, while fellow American Trayvon Bromell was second in 10.28 seconds.
Japan’s Yoshihide Kiryu edged out Cadogan for bronze in 10.34 seconds.
