My Kingston – Peter Goldson
What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
My time at St Hugh’s Prep School and visits to Rockfort Mineral Baths with my family.
You have been at MF&G for more than two decades. What keeps you motivated?
I really love the practice of law and the new things I learn every day.
Share one of your most memorable moments as an attorney.
Being part of the team at the Privy Council in the Century National case.
What advice would you give to a classroom of aspiring lawyers?
Don’t practise as a lawyer if you don’t love the law. Do what is right. Be humble and remain in learner’s mode. Know when you don’t know — which is most of the time for many years to come.
You have been an integral part of your company’s celebration of its 70th year. Why was it important to mount an exhibition and to open your hallowed halls to the public?
We wanted to celebrate the firm and its many dimensions, such as its wonderful art collection: all of these dimensions are unique and special. We thought it important that our clients and the public get a chance to share in the celebration.
The Masters appear alongside six emerging contemporary Jamaican artists. How significant is this?
The firm has always been very cutting-edge and forward-thinking. It is very much a part of our culture to celebrate our past with our eyes on the future. We wanted to view the artistic giants who are established along with the younger emerging artists.
It was once de rigueur for companies to pay homage to the arts — indeed, companies like yours boast substantial collections and are long-time supporters of the creative industry. Is the plan to get more involved and by extension encourage others?
We plan to remain involved in different spheres of the arts and certainly to encourage others by our example.
Would you say that your law firm, considered by many to be ultra-traditional, has been forced to become a bit more ‘hip’?
Not at all. Lawyers by nature tend to be conservative but MF&G has always been the pioneer, the adventurer — not afraid to be different.
