EUGENE, USA — Michael O’Hara won Jamaica’s third medal ever in the men’s 200m at the World Junior Championships on Friday when he took the bronze medal in a wind aided 20.31 seconds (2.3m/s) at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

O’Hara who was a reluctant participant in the 100m where he dropped out at the semi-final stage, joined Usain Bolt who won the gold in 2002 in Kingston and Nickel Ashmeade who took the silver in Poland in 2008.

His medal brought to three the total won by Jamaica at the championships, all by men, a gold to Jaheel Hyde in the 400m hurdles in 49.29 seconds and silver to Tyler Mason in the 110m hurdles in 13.06 seconds as Jamaica ended the fourth day of the six day championships in eighth place.Both Hyde’s and Mason’s times were new Jamaican National Junior Records.

O’Hara, the World Youth Champion last year, finished behind the USA’s Trentavis Friday- 20.04 seconds and Nigeria’s Ejowvokoghene Divine Oduduru- 20.25 seconds as pre championships favourite Zharnel Hughes was a disappointing fifth. Hughes who represented Anguilla won the Class 1 100m for Kingston College at the ISSA Boys Champs in March.

Meanwhile in the women’s 200m final Natalliah Whyte was seventh in a wind aided 23.48 seconds (2.4m/s).

Sixteen year old American Kaylin Whitney won in 22.82 seconds with Sweden’s National Senior Record holder Iréne Ekelund second in 22.97 seconds and Ecuador’s Ángela Tenorio third in 23.15 seconds.

Whitney had taken the bronze in the 100m earlier while Tenorio was second, both behind Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith.

No medal for

Jamaica added two more medals a gold from Jaheel Hyde and new National Junior Record in the men’s 400m hurdles and Michael O’Hara won a bronze in the men’s 200m on Friday’s fourth day of competition at the 15th IAAF World Junior Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

It was Jamaica’s third medal of the championships after Tyler Mason’s 110m hurdles silver the day before and placed Jamaica in ninth place on the medals tables with two days to go.

Hyde completed a unique double after winning gold in the 110m hurdles at the World Youth Championships last year in Ukraine as his 49.29 seconds eclipsed his own 49.49 seconds set at the ISSA Boys Champs earlier this year and is also a World Junior Leading time.

Bahrain’s Ali Khamis Khamis took silver with his third National Junior Record of the championships 49.55 seconds while American Tim Holmes was third in 50.07 seconds.

It was also the first medal in the event for a Jamaican man after four medals from the female, two gold medals by Kaliese Spencer in 2006 in China and Janieve Russell in Barcelona, Spain last year and a bronze from Camille Robinson in 2002 in Jamaica and silver from Allison Beckford in 1998 in Annecy, France.
