Stephenson challenges Speid for KSAFA presidency
THE Kingston & St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) delegates will today get the chance to decide who will run the Corporate Area body for the next two years.
The candidates are incumbent President Rudolph Speid and Ambassador Stewart Stephenson, the former KSAFA boss.
The elections will be held during the meeting of KSAFA’s Congress at the offices of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).
Members will have registration at 8:00 am before the 9:00 am start to the meeting. Non-members and those not directly involved in the elections will not be allowed access.
A total of 39 entities — with two delegates from each — are expected to be allowed to vote.
Speid, the head of the association since 2008, exuded calmness when contacted by the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
“I’m confident we are going to win, and comfortably,” he said.
Stephenson, who ran KSAFA — the country’s most powerful confederation between 1996 and 2000 and again from 2004-08 –was similarly relaxed, while predicting the demise of the incumbent.
“Mr Speid will be removed tomorrow. If the will of the candidates is allowed, and from what we have heard, the majority of the delegates will support his removal,” Stephenson claimed.
Speid, a chartered accountant, has been opposed before as KSAFA president. He effortlessly brushed aside the challenge of Leon Mitchell in August 2012, but barely held off a no-confidence motion to his leadership in September of last year.
The incumbent is also the chairman of Premier League team Cavalier SC and a former JFF treasurer.
The challenger Stephenson, a lawyer by profession and Jamaica’s ambassador to Cuba from 2002-04, is a long-time member of Real Mona FC.
The two have been embroiled in a contentious run-in to the election, arguing on policies relating to fund-raising, club development as well as compensation and prize awards for clubs. Both parties have also disagreed on how the election process is being handled and contention has been rampant over the adherence to the constitution.
Ricardo Chin, the president of Waterhouse FC, will run as first vice-president on Speid’s slate, while Jackie Cowan will be challenged for the second vice-president post. Peter Higgins will run as general secretary, with Hernan Cruickshank as his assistant.
Error Howlett of Allman/Woodford FC will run for treasurer, with Tivoli Gardens FC team manager Brian Rose as his assistant.
Long-time football administrator Carvel Stewart, the chairman of Harbour View FC, will run on Stephenson’s ticket as first vice-president. Mark Bennett of Brown’s Town FC is vying for the post of second vice-president. Wayne Shaw, the president of Santos FC, and Dwayne Dillon, the boss at Rockfort FC, are trying to win seats as general secretary and assistant general secretary, respectively.
Elvis Jenkins of Maxfield Park FC is running for the post of treasurer, while Neil Reese of Pembroke Hall FC is vying to become his deputy.
