NADB’s junior camp a success, says Davis
The first vice-president of the National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB), Humbert Davis, said that the 2014 Junior Camp was very successful.
The two-week programme was held at the Maxfield Park Primary School in Kingston and the Jackson Primary School in St Catherine, and was sponsored by the Sports Development Foundation (SDF). It started on Monday, July 21 and ended Thursday, July 31, and saw over 150 students participating from seven schools — Maxfield Park Primary, New Day All-Age and Junior High, Mount Moreland All-Age and Junior High, Sligoville Primary, Simon Primary, Tradegar Park All-Age, and Jackson Primary.
“Throughout the two weeks, these youngsters practised the utilisation of resources, how to engage their minds to retain information, as well as how to develop other skills that can assist them in their future endeavours. This was done through the use of three disciplines — conduct, contraction and construction,” said Davis.
He also said he wanted this programme to be introduced into schools across the country.
“I want this programme to be in all schools in Jamaica as we want to reinforce the skills of negotiation, interaction, and other positive basic life skills among the young people and I think that this programme is the right way to achieve such aim,” he explained.
Davis said that the main goal of NADB is to continuously intensify and increase the interest and participation in the sport, as well as the number of tournaments at all levels.
“Over the years the NADB, while ensuring that the game of domino maintains its dominance as a sport for all, has worked assiduously to use the pull and popularity of domino as a cell site to develop and reinforce positive values, particularly focused on children.
“Through its targeted programmes in schools, in communities through community leagues, and the formation of domino clubs in tertiary institutions, the NADB has been able to reinforce its primary objectives of promoting the sport in Jamaica,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
He thanked the SDF for coming on board with NADB to host the Junior Camp.
“I just want to thank Charmaine Hanson and her team at SDF for their support, as without their assistance this camp would not have been possible and for that I say thank you.”
