Forbes calls on J’can well-to-do to support women’s football
Managing director of Sherwin Williams Ian Forbes reiterates the call to public and private sectors to broaden their support of the development of Jamaica’s sporting arena, and in particular women’s football.
“I am firm in the knowledge that some of us, not only in corporate Jamaica, but private individuals, who are well positioned, can and should do a lot more given the blessings afforded them.
“And I use this forum to call on them to extend their goodwill in areas that can only serve to uplift the spirit of our people and empower and inspire them to raise their game in their individual sector of national life,” he said, while addressing the launch of the Sherwin Williams-sponsored Women’s Premier League and Colourscape Knockout competitions at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) offices on Friday.
Forbes, who is also the manager of the Jamaica College football team, went on to add that his company has no challenge in lending its support as it brings high levels of pleasure from a company standpoint.
Having sponsored women’s football for 13 consecutive years, and having pumped a whopping $7.1 million into this year’s competitions, Forbes described the players as the engine that drives the support of his company.
“We at Sherwin Williams are very happy and content with what we do to give a lending hand to women who seek to play an important role in nation building,” he said.
Forbes also used the opportunity to applaud the women for their sacrifice, determination and commitment to press on despite the limited support.
“The level of success… is there for all to see, those who do not should only take a look at the lives of these women which have improved significantly through this meaningful initiative,” he implored.
Forbes, who is driven by sports volunteerism, calls on wider Jamaica to rally around the nation’s female footballers.
“Come on, Jamaica’s women football needs us more than ever, we cannot sideline or desert them now, let us all rise to that challenge. Let us not fail them (as) they need us, and above all, we as a country need them,” Forbes urged.
