Around the Entertainment Globe
Meghan Trainor

Around the Entertainment Globe

5 New to the Billboard charts with a hot new song is 21-year-old American Meghan Trainor with her single All About That Bass. Currently ranked at number four on the US chart on an upward trend, the song comprises a pleasing tetro R&B rhythm. The song is intended to make plus-size girls feel better about themselves, but has received criticisms of containing lyrics that can be interpreted as disrespectful to slim females. Trainor retains that “I’m not bashing skinny girls, I know even you (skinny girls) struggle”.

4 Rude is still at the top of the charts. Yes, the song is on a global high, with record sales in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden and the US. It has definitely proved that it is one of the hottest songs of the summer, if not the entire year.

3 The Expendables 3 is out in theatres now, and is shaping up to be a great flick. With its star-studded cast (including Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Jet Li and Arnold Schwarzenegger) and its action-filled plot, The Expendables 3 is a must-see movie for all audiences. It is written by Sylvester Stallone and directed by Patrick Hughes.

2 What is up with Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim again? Just when their last lyrical encounter seemed to be water under the bridge, Lil’ Kim released her own remix of Beyonce’s Flawless, which was remixed earlier by Minaj. Kim started an attack in her verse on that track, and furthered the rift in a follow-up song entitled Identity Theft. Lil’ Kim claims that Nicki stole her image, and is not deserving of her current position in rap music. Nicki Minaj is yet to bite back.

1 On the local front, the self-proclaimed ‘Tower Man’, who goes by the name of Ikon, created a buzz last week when he climbed the aerial pole of Zip 103FM in Half-Way-Tree. The artiste climbed the broadcast tower and demanded that ZJ Liquid, who was on air at the time, play his song or he would jump. His song was eventually played and emergency services ‘rescued’ him from the pole. In an interview after he was released from police lock-up, the artiste joked about the incident and said that he was frustrated at the difficulty of getting airplay for his songs, despite his claimed talent.
