Williams takes up scholarship in the US
MONTEGO BAY, St James — FORMER Herbert Morrison sprinter and national junior representative Gawain Williams left the island on Sunday to take up a full athletics scholarship at the University of South Dakota in the United States.
Williams, who won silver in Class 2 in 2011 and bronze in Class 3 the previous year in the 100m event at the ISSA Boys Champs, will join former Herbert Morrison teammate Tevaskie Lewin at the institution, which competes in the NCAA Division 1.
Williams won five gold medals at the COCAA Western Champs between 2009 and this year, as well as two bronze medals and a silver medal in the 100m and 200m sprints.
He was dominant at Class 2 winning the 100m twice and the 200m with the double coming in 2012.
Williams was a finalist in the Central American and Caribbean Juniors Under-18 100m in 2012 and anchored the Jamaica team to gold.
