Jamaica applauded for best-ever performance in World Chess
KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) — Jamaica’s minister with responsibility for sport Natalie Neita Headley has applauded the national team for achieving its “best performance ever” in the 41st World Chess Olympiad, which has just concluded in Tromso, Norway.
“Overall, this is the most Jamaica has ever achieved in a single Chess Olympics,” the minister noted.
“I am truly heartened to see that we are making such strides in an area of sport in which the country cannot claim traditional excellence.”
The men gained three new international titles, while the women gained one new international title to finish in the top 10 in their category.
“The performance of our chess team only goes to show that with preparation and discipline our sportsmen and women can excel in any field,” the minister said.
“We will put our mark wherever we go and whatever sport we participate in, and I am pleased we have started to do this in world chess.”
