Calling all math teachers
THE Ministry of Education is inviting teachers of mathematics to come forward to be trained as specialists in the subject.
Portfolio Minister Ronald Thwaites says at least 200 specialists are needed to address needs at the primary and secondary levels.
The minister, who was speaking at the official launch of the national mathematics programme called ‘Math Counts’ at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in St James last Thursday (August 21), said the ministry is prepared to incentivise the move to get more math teachers to join the initiative.
“Whatever is needed, we are prepared to do. I understand that many of you are hesitant about leaving your substantive posts to take up your invited posts… I want to say to you that arrangements have been made to ensure that it is worthwhile for you,”
he stated.
The education minister urged those who have joined the programme to encourage their colleagues to come on board. He said matters of advancement in the system are being looked at for the participants.
“For those who co-operate in this vital venture, you are well slated for advancement in the education system because you have recommended yourself as being part of transformation,” he stated.
Math Counts seeks to train teachers as mathematics specialists, who will work as coaches and resource persons in the nation’s schools.
Training is already under way by the ministry, through sponsorship from the Insurance Association of Jamaica and Jamaica National Building Society.
