Typewriter makes strong return to form
AFTER falling victim to the much improved Commanding Chief on three occasions this season, last year’s Superstakes winner Typewriter benefited from very favourable conditions and as expected won handily, beating Open Allowance horses in the Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup to signal that his preparation is on course for the defence of his Supertakes crown.
Dane Nelson, who was asked to be at the helm for the first as regular rider Shane Ellis was doing riding duties in Trinidad and Tobago, kept the former Derby winner off the pace and instead challenged longtime leader Exotic Gold in the stretch. There was a battle but the superior class of Typewriter took over and in the end, the gelding defeated the mare by three parts of a length.
It was not the rollicking run race fans have come to expect from the much accomplished Typewriter, but it was enough to give encouragement to his trainer Spencer Chung for future endeavours.
Let us watch as the situation unfolds. If all goes well, racing is in for quite a treat involving the top-rated horses in the land, Typewriter, Commanding Chief and Perfect Neighbour in the Superstakes.
