Top 5 summer transfers
THE last month — of the three-month summer transfer window — was very active, to say the least.
After the World Cup in Brazil (which was a showcase for many young and ‘undiscovered’ talents) it seems that the big European clubs were throwing names around for some even bigger moves.
Here are teenAGE Observer’s top 5 Summer transfers (in no particular order):
James Rodriguez to Real Madrid
Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez moved from French Ligue 1 side — AS Monaco — to Real Madrid for ¤80 million following the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The man referred to as ‘James’, had an unfulfilling 2013/2014 season with Monaco, but turned up for his team in Brazil and took home the tournament’s Golden Boot award. His performances in Brazil added a premium and in true Galactico style, Real pounced. James will be asked to reproduce his international form for seasons to come. Is he ready?
Luis Suarez to Barcelona
Another headliner at the World Cup this summer in Brazil, Luis Suarez secured a move to Barcelona after his club Liverpool accepted a fee of £65 million Pounds from the La Liga giants. The Uruguayan was in the spotlight in Brazil after biting (again) Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder. Suarez was subsequently banned by FIFA from all football activity for four months, but had the ban later revised. There is no doubting Suarez’s goal-scoring ability, but Barcelona will have problems fitting him in as well as keeping him on a tight leash.
Diego Costa to Chelsea
After 27 goals in Spain’s La Liga last season, Diego Costa finally made the switch from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea FC for a fee some consider to be a bargain — £32 million. Born in Brazil, but chose to represent the Spanish national team, Costa failed to fire for Spain at the World Cup after only just returning from a hamstring problem. However, the striker has shaken off the injury and has already netted in the first three league games of the season. With his impressive work rate, powerful and aggressive nature, it seems that Chelsea may have pulled off a coup.
Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal
Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez became the second most expensive player in Arsenal’s history, after the Gunners paid all of £35 million to Barcelona for the player’s services. The transfer comes a year after Arsenal paid Real Madrid £43 million for German playmaker Mesut Ozil. Sanchez has enjoyed a bright last 12 months — he sparkled at the World Cup in June after scoring 23 goals in what must be considered his best season at Barcelona. He gives Arsene Wenger great attacking options while on the face of it, seems a great transfer.
Angel Di Maria to Manchester United
To the surprise of many, Manchester United pulled off the purchase of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid for a British transfer record of £59.7 million; later adding the dramatic loan signing of striker Falcao on deadline day. Di Maria was the statement signing United has been clamouring for throughout the summer and should be the start of a rebuilding process within the squad. Di Maria can play anywhere in midfield and vastly improves a team lacking in creativity — he notched 17 assists last season — the most in Europe’s top leagues.
