INDECOM starts probe of Garveymeade fatal shooting
THE Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has started investigations into Monday’s fatal shooting of two civilians in the community of Garveymeade in Portmore, St Catherine.
The deceased have been identified as Dadrian Davis and Okeelie Brown.
In a release yesterday, INDECOM said accounts of the incident received by the commission from the police and that of the residents showed inconsistencies.
INDECOM said a team of investigators and forensic examiners, led by the director of complaints for the St Catherine Region Floyd McNabb, responded to the incident at approximately 7:30 pm, where they processed the bodies of the men, interviewed the policemen concerned and swabbed their hands. The weapons of the police involved in the shooting are to be submitted to the Government Forensic Laboratory for analysis, while interviews with civilians were still being carried out, said INDECOM.
“Investigators will be revisiting the scene in the coming days with a view to continuing the collection of information. Going forward, the post-mortem reports will be examined and statements collected will be assessed to determine further action by investigators,” said the agency.
INDECOM, meanwhile, has asked residents to cooperate with investigators as they carry out the probe into this incident and appealed to anyone with information that can assist with this or any other investigation to visit or call its head office in Kingston.
Monday’s fatal shooting brought to five the number of security force-related fatalities for the month of September.
INDECOM said that 94 civilians have lost their lives in security force-related incidents for the year so far.
