Sweet sound of Diztortion
THANKS to his work on deejay Stylo G’s Badd (featuring Sister Nancy) and the British Top 20 hit Soundbwoy, Diztortion has become one of the United Kingdom’s in-demand producers.
He currently has the number 11 song in that country with Rari Workout which features Lethal Bizzle, JME and Tempa T, and recently worked on his first solo single called Bondelero featuring UK Reggae artist Ms Dynamite.
Diztortion’s real name is Raoul Chen and he was born in The Netherlands, to Surinamese parents. Now in his mid-20s, he has built an impressive resume working with some of the biggest names in British music.
“I started producing in Amsterdam where I am from, quite a few years now. I was just having fun to begin with but I soon realised it was something I had a natural talent for, as many people liked what I was doing,” said Diztortion in an interview with the Observer.
He started as a rapper and produced rap acts from his hometown but gave up being an artiste and went into production full-time.
Soundbwoy, his first major project, was a big hit in the UK and announced the Spanish Town-born Stylo G.
According to Diztortion, though he was born in Europe he listened to music from his roots.
“Caribbean and South American rhythms were a big part of my culture while growing up and reggae was something I grew up listening to at home as well as Dutch dance music and hip hop,” he explained.
Those influences can be heard on Bondolero which he describes as “a really hot club record. It’s got everything my productions are about. Hard drums, reggae grooves and club vibes”.
Since hitting with Stylo G, Diztortion has had collaborated with other British acts such as rapper Lethal Bizzle & Sigma.
Diztortion says he is a fan of dancehall artistes Vybz Kartel, Popcaan and Alkaline.
“I love distinctive voices and there are a lot in reggae/ dancehall. I’m also a massive fan of Chronixx, he’s a real artiste- amazing live,” he stated. “I’m really hoping to collaborate with the producer Rvssian. Love his sound too.”
