St Jago finds firing boots
ST Jago High were this weekend’s top scorers in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup fixtures on the weekend. They crushed Penwood High 8-0 on Friday to keep things interesting in Group F as they sit in third place — four points behind Hydel High and one behind Calabar.
St George’s College were victors of the North Street derby on Saturday with a resounding 3-0 win over Kingston College (KC). This leaves them clear at the top of Group A on 12 points, while KC are still on 9. Breathing down their backs, however, are Bridgeport High who thumped group beating sticks Campion College 6-1. That win leaves them three points behind KC as well as gives them a better gold difference.
Over in Group B, leaders Charlie Smith stuttered to a 0-0 draw with Vauxhall, which leaves them three points in front of Excelsior High. Cumberland got their first win of the campaign when they beat Mona High 1-0 in Friday’s other game.
Denham Town continued their march to the Walker Cup when they edged Innswood 1-0 in Group C. Innswood dropped from second to third due to St Mary’s College 2-0 win over Edith Dalton. Elsewhere in the group, Ardenne and Tivoli Gardens High failed to register goals in a 0-0 draw.
Camperdown suffered the consequences of firing blanks in their 0-0 draw to Bridgeport as Haile Selaisse overtook them to become sole leaders of Group D. Haile Selassie gained a comfortable 3-1 victory over Dunoon Technical. In the group’s other game, Greater Portmore dispatched Papine High 2-0 to keep their dream of advancing to the next round alive.
Wolmer’s Boys maintained their 100 per cent record in Group E of competition with a 3-0 win over Trench Town High on Saturday. Holy Trinity High seemed to have secured their progression to round two with a close 2-1 win over Clan Carthy High.
Hydel High dropped their first points of the season as they failed to shake off a stubborn St Catherine High in a 1-1 draw in Group F. Calabar High also gained crucial points in their bid for round two with a 1-0 over Eltham High.
St Andrew Technical managed to clip Norman Manley 1-0 in what might be one of the most significant clashes of Group G. Elsewhere, Jamaica College solidified their stance as favourites with a 5-0 whipping of Kingston Technical.
