Baseball development apace in Ja, says INSPORTS official
DONOVAN Corcho, director of baseball at the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), reiterated that his organisation has doubled its effort in paving the way for baseball to become a traditional sport in Jamaica.
“We are in the process of sensitising Jamaica and specifically corporate Jamaica by means of promoting our activities about what we are doing.. so when we approach them they won’t have question signs as to what it is that we are talking about and we would have a positive result,” Corcho told the Jamaica Observer at a meeting hosted at their National Arena headquarters yesterday.
He also explained that they will be launching the INSPORTS/Little League primary schools baseball competition next year in tandem with Little League Baseball International situated in Williams Port, Pennsylvania, USA.
The competition will be part of a joint baseball project which will also see physical education instructors being given an opportunity to be certified coaches through Baseball Canada.
“We feel that we needed to attach our project to an international age group entity that will give us benefits and the credibility cover that we need to promote the sport relative to seeking sponsorship. As a chartered fully registered member of Little League, we get technical support, administrative support and equipment acquisition,” Corcho revealed.
That project will begin in October and will also select 20 primary schools from Kingston and St Catherine that will take part in the competition.
Corcho expressed certainty that the cash-rich sport can be a success in Jamaica and could further enhance our status in the sporting arena.
“The aim is to entrench and institutionalise baseball much like how we did basketball. We believe that any sport that Jamaican kids wrap their brain around, we can be successful at it,” he noted.
