Conspiracy case against Vybz Kartel, co-accused dropped
DIRECTOR of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn yesterday entered a nolle prosequi, ending the perverting the course of justice matter against imprisoned entertainer Vybz Kartel and his two accused.
The case was dropped in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on the ground that his murder conviction and sentence, which is tied to this case, is being appealed.
Vybz Kartel, who appeared in court in an T-shirt with a picture of Elmo on the front, and his co-accused appeared relieved at the decision.
Tom Tavares-Finson, who represents Vybz Kartel, had previously made an application for the matter to be discontinued, arguing that it would be the prudent thing to do, given the fact that the witnesses from the murder case are the same ones who will give evidence on this lesser charge.
Still, the nolle prosequi was entered on the condition that the DPP could again resurrect the case in the future.
Vybz Kartel, Vanessa ‘Gaza Slim’ Saddler, and Andre Henry were charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice in relation to the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
The three are accused of conspiring to have investigators believe that Williams was alive after he had been reported dead.
In April, Vybz Kartel (whose real name is Adidja Palmer), Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John were sentenced to life imprisonment for Williams’ murder.
