Shelly-Ann gives back to George Headley
TRACK star and newly-named ambassador Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has given back to her alma mater, George Headley Primary, in the form of a $1-million donation.
Fraser-Pryce visited the school on September 25 as part of a National Road Safety Council (NRSC) team.
She said George Headley helped to mould her into the sprinter she is today, and so it was only fitting that she give back to her school.
“This donation should have been made a while ago. However, what better time to make my surprise donation than now while I am touring with the NRSC?” she said,
Fraser-Pryce, a NRSC ambassador, said road safety is of national importance, and should be widely emphasised, especially among students who have to travel to school daily.
“Road safety should be of importance to us all. It is crucial that we continuously remind and encourage our students to engage in road safety practices,” she said.
Along with the cheque, principal Aretha Willie also received 500 exercise books printed by the NRSC.
“We are happy that NRSC and Shelly-Ann chose our school for their school tour today. It is a wonderful feeling to know that one of our past students is now a gold medallist and thought of coming back to give to us,” Willie said.
Meanwhile Paula Fletcher, executive director of the NRSC, also emphasised the need for students to be vigilant on the roads.
“It is never too much to remind them of the rules of the road, with the most important being to ‘look left, look right, look left again and listen’ before crossing,” Fletcher said.
