STETHS lead 7 others to Inter-zone round of daCosta Cup

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) led seven others into the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup football competition after wins in yesterday’s return-round games.

STETHS, Cornwall College, Manchester High, Mile Gully, St Mary Technical, Dinthill Technical, Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo all confirmed their places to bring to 12, the number of schools who have now advanced.

Prior to yesterday, Frome Technical, Muschett High, Clarendon College and Cedric Titus were the early qualifiers.

Meanwhile, four games were not played yesterday, three affected by bad weather, while it was heard that the Thompson Town v Claude McKay game in Zone H was not played after the Thompson Town players were ordered not to take the field by a senior administrator at the school.

On the field yesterday, STETHS turned back Maggotty High 2-0 to improve to 22 points and clinched their place in the Inter-zone round from Zone E.

Cornwall College continued their hot start, beating St James High 4-1, their sixth straight win in Zone A, moving to 18 points and are almost assured of winning the zone.

Akeem McCarthy from the penalty spot and Alrick Ottey gave Cornwall College a 2-0 lead at half-time, but St James High pulled one back in the 64th minute through substitute Ronaldo McLeish, as they snapped Cornwall’s 378 minutes since they had conceded a goal.

Striker Jourdaine Fletcher and overlapping defender Michael Heaven scored to restore Cornwall’s two-goal lead.

Manchester High conceded their first goal of the season but beat DeCarteret College 3-1 with two goals from Daniel Wint and the other from Kevaughn Issacs to secure their berth frorm Zone F, while Mile Gully also advanced after blanking Cross Keys 3-0.

St Mary Technical snapped a three-game winless run, edging Islington High 2-0 to secure their place from Zone J on 14 points.

Dinthill Technical advanced after beating Bog Walk 2-0 in Zone K, to lead with 16 points, as Charlemont have gone winless in three games after winning their first two. They were beaten 4-1 by Ewarton High.

Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo took both places from Zone M after 1-0 wins over Denbigh High and Porus High, respectively.

Marcus Garvey High are a point away from their Inter-zone qualification after beating York Castle, while zone leaders and early qualifier Cedric Titus lost to Steer Town 1-0.

Petersfield are in control of Zone D after beating Godfrey Stewart High 3-1 in Sav-la-Mar, while Green Pond High were 3-0 winners over Anchovy High in a game reduced to 70 minutes after a late start.
