4 more schools advance in daCosta Cup

BOG WALK, St Catherine — Four more schools including Ewarton High, who are making it out of the first round of the ISSA/Lime daCosta Cup football competition for the first time in their 45-year history, made progress after wins in yesterday’s return round of games.

Ewarton High, founded in 1969, edged Bog Walk High 4-3 in their Zone K game with team captain Odaine Edwards celebrating his birthday with a hat-trick as they improved to 16 points, same as the other qualifiers Dinthill High, who were beaten 1-0 by McGrath High.

Oracabessa High are also back in the Inter-zone after an absence of over 10 years, while Marcus Garvey High and Kemps Hill also booked their spots to take the number of schools already in the next round to 19 so far.

Oracabessa High joined St Mary Technical as the qualifiers from Zone J after edging Brimmervale High 1-0. In another Zone J game, St Mary High came from 0-3 down to draw 3-3 with Islington High in a game of academic interest only.

Marcus Garvey finally booked their spot from Zone I after a 3-0 beating of Steer Town, but Cedric Titus stayed at the top on 22 points after Chadane Linton’s second hat-trick of the season took them to a 3-0 win over Ocho Rios in Clarks Town.

Kemps Hill, who qualified for the Inter-zone for the first time last season, made it two-in-a-row after their 3-0 win over Foga Road took them to 22 points in Zone N.

Old Harbour High snapped a two-game losing streak to edge Central High 1-0 and improve to 17 points, same as Vere Technical, whose game against Tacius Golding was not played due to a clash of colours.

Lacovia High’s progress to the Inter-zone round was held up further after they lost 0-2 to St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), who have now secured Zone E honours with 25 points.

Lacovia are still in second place on 19 points, but Munro College are now on 17 after their 3-2 win over Maggotty High.

Former champions Cornwall College and Clarendon both won their seventh straight wins.

Cornwall secured Zone A honours for the first time in two years after beating Green Pond High 2-0 at Jarrett Park with goals from Alrick Ottey and Jourdaine Fletcher in the first half.

Fourteen-year-old Ricardo McIntosh got a double for Clarendon College in their 4-0 win over Claude McKay in their Zone H game.
