Lady Genius bats for women
SINGJAY Lady Genius is speaking up for women in her upcoming single Nah Stop Try.
Produced by Push It Records in New York, the track will be released later this month.
“It’s a kinda upbeat, jazzy, dancehall song. It’s about the struggles that many female artistes face trying to make it in the male-dominated arena of dancehall,” the 25-year-old told the Jamaica Observer. “Every woman can relate to it.”
According to Lady Genius — whose given name is Danette Mahabeer — being grounded, willing to work hard and being determined are necessary traits to make it in the industry.
The Clarendon-born artiste said being an entertainer was always her dream. So, she armed herself with a degree in Hospitality, Entertainment and Tourism Management from Moneague College in St Ann and worked as an entertainment coordinator on the hotel circuit for more than six years.
“Music is my passion, so I had to leave and pursue my dream,” she said.
Lady Genius recorded her first single, Suitcase, in March 2013 and was hooked. She has subsequently released Hurt You, which features Anthony Malvo, and a cover version of Rihanna’s Stay.
She said she recently reworked Suitcase with a modern twist. An accompanying video for the track is also doing the rounds.
Working as a presenter for Atlanta-based Internet station Da Flava Radio and RockDaBox.net in Florida, she said has helped her to hone her skills.
“I want to be recognised internationally. I want persons to be able to relate to my music, which will be positive and reality-based,” she said.
