The post to post superstakes analysis
The Superstakes represents one of those precious moments in our racing history. The race first won by Legal Light 35 years ago represents the best the sport has to offer; the stayers, the sprinters, the milers the best juveniles, and the best jockeys, competing for glory.
Which horse will win this race over 10 furlongs? The answer will come tomorrow by 5:00 pm, but for now the Complete Racing Guide provides an analysis of the 11 starters.
1. Miracle Star R Halledeen 57.0 kg P Chang
This five-year-old chestnut horse is completely out of his depth. It will truly take a miracle for him to win this one.
2.S Ellis 57.0 kg S Chung
The defending champion who defeated Perfect Neighbour and Commanding Chief in last year’s renewal. He seems to have caught his form at the precise time by winning his last two races. Typewriter has consistently been defeated by his two main rivals this season and although winning two races in lower company has the pedigree and the class to perform on the big day. He will be close with the leaders and look for his regular rider and big race jockey Shane Ellis to push him on leaving the three furlong marker. Typewriter is very fit and will pull out the stops to retain his crown. The trainer is confident.
3 . Hologram Shadow J Erwin 57.0 kg P Lynch
In with the big ‘boys and girls’ now going over a distance which he is quite unfamiliar with having not raced over 10-furlongs during the course of this year. Very, very difficult seeing this Patrick Lynch trained dark brown gelding winning this one.
4. Franfield O Walker 54.o kg R Azan
The only horse from this year’s crop of three-year-olds to reach the Superstakes with Derby and St Leger winner Relampago not entered. Franfield is a very interesting entry from the barn of Richard Azan who has been successful in this race so many times before with Menudo and Mark My Word. Franfield is definitely a late bloomer. Was never a winning factor in the Governor’s Cup and the 2000 Guineas. He was missing from the Derby and did not compete in the St Leger. But Franfield has been developing nicely, finishing a close second when first competing at the Overnight Allowance level and winning the next time of asking. He is young, is improving, will get the distance and if ever there is one to watch in this race, then look no further than Franfield.
5. Amicable K Robinson 55.0 kg S Chung
One of only two of the fairer sex in this race. Should keep his stable companion Typewriter settled in the saddling barn, the parade ring and when they come on the track but will be nowhere around after the gates open.
6. Time For Arms P Francis 57.0 kg F Glispie
Time For Arms has not progressed well this season. His performances have been warm and sometimes quite cold. Will have to come out of the trenches and perform like never before to even have a chance in this one
7. Uncle Taf A Robles 57.0 kg S Sharpe
Uncle Taf has been running some very decent races of late, including a fighting second to Typewriter going a mile. An unpredictable sort who will more than likely try to run from in front. Might be in for a minor share.
8. Perfect Neighbour S Muir 57.0 W DaCosta
Perfect Neighbour has transitioned from his three-year-old days to the higher stage of racing with some aplomb. Known mainly as a long distanced campaigner he has developed into a very versatile sort as evidenced by his wins earlier in the year over six furlongs and seven and
a half furlongs. Has been defeated twice by Commanding Chief this year, receiving weight and with the handicaps now in favour of Commanding Chief a lot will depend on the progress he has made being younger than both Typewriter and Commanding Chief. Interesting choice of rider in Shamaree Muir, the only apprentice from the last batch of apprentice riders to make it to the Superstakes. Muir has ridden Perfect Neighbour twice, winning once and out muscled in the other by Dane Nelson. Expect Muir to have Perfect Neighbour close to the pace before venturing for victory leaving the four furlong marker.
9. Military Move W Griffiths 57.0 kg L Freemantle
Military Man has developed into quite a fighter and while it will be difficult to see him winning this prize, he will certainly be trying. May hit the board. Mr Superstakes himself Winston Griffiths is in the saddle and that is always a good omen.
10. Commanding Chief D Nelson 57.0 kg E Francis
What more can one ask for in a racehorse. Commanding Chief is stacked with class, he has a never say die attitude and when you think he is beaten he will find something in reserve and Dane Nelson is the perfect accomplice for him. Coming into the Superstakes, Commanding Chief boasts a seasonal record of three wins from four outings. His only defeat came from the hoofs of Perfect Neighbour allowing weight. The tables have turned and the two are now at level weights. Commanding Chief has been sailing at exercise and will perform, in fact, he will be the favourite and deliver he can as his chances are better than all.
11. Exotic Gold D Cardenas 55.0 kg W DaCosta
The other female in this race. Should be around for the first six or seven furlongs after which the ‘big boys’ will take over.
