RECENTLY the St Andrew High School for Girls Auditorium was the location fpr an evening of inspirational edutainment. Dubbed Gospel With A Difference, the evening’s featured act was show conceptualiser Kimiela ‘Candy’ Issacs.
Special appearances were made by vocalist, author and psalmist, Jermaine Gordon; the Laude Dance Ministries; June Thompson Lawson; and Rushane Stewart.
Candy, took patrons on a musical journey through three sections entitled old-time gospel/jazz, Jamaican gospel and international, gospel were all equally entertaining and fulfilling.
The journey in the first segment started and ended with the glorious movements of the Laude Dance Ministry. Laud danced to Amazing Grace and Soon and Very Soon.
June Thompson Lawson followed with another take of Amazing Grace and Ride On King Jesus.
Candy then took to the stage and continued the walk on a negro spiritual path singing Swing Low, Hush Somebody’s Calling My Name, In the Upper Room, Oh Happy Day, and My Tribute.
What came next had patrons dancing and singing all over the auditorium. Candy performed a great mix of songs including One Ting Lead To Another, a ska medley, a tribute to Otis Wright, and concluded with songs written by herself such as Reassurance, My Faithful Friend and Touched By An Angel.
After two superb sets showcasing great gifts and talents, it was time for a short intermission.
After the break guest psalmist Jermaine Gordon resumed the journey and was well received. Patrons sang to his songs My Number 1, God Is Good (Mungu Yu Mwema), You Are God, and Lord I Surrender.
Candy followed with a celebratory last set that was filled with tears, laughter, worship, and high energy. The line-up of songs included Four Days Late, Indescribable, Encourage Yourself, I Believe I Can Fly featuring Rushane Stewart doing sign language, Victory and Freedom.
This show was everything and more. It was refreshing, the talents showcased were on point, the band lead by Desi Jones was splendid and Kimiela ‘Candy’ Isaacs brought her A-game.
