JUTC driver accused of stealing $60
A driver employed to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on allegations that he tried to rob the company of $60 after collecting a $180 from a passenger for bus fare.
Charged with obtaining credit by fraud is 49-year-old Anthony Robinson of D’Anguillar Road, Kingston 2.
The police alleged that on the day in question, revenue inspectors boarded the express bus Robinson was driving in the vicinity of the KFC outlet in Rockfort, St Andrew. The bus was heading to 11 Miles in Bull Bay.
During their inspection, a passenger was allegedly found with a ticket valued at $120, instead of the expected $180-ticket.
The passenger, when questioned allegedly told inspectors that he gave Robinson $200 and was given the $120 ticket along with $20 change.
It is also reported that Robinson had changed the bus settings from 95 express to 73A to ensure that the system generated $120-tickets instead of $180-tickets.
When questioned why he changed the bus settings, he reportedly said, “Is so we do it all the while and never have an issue before.”
But on Thursday when Robinson appeared in court he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
“That is not how it go?” Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey asked Robinson.
“No,” he answered while shaking his head in disbelief.
The magistrate then told Robinson to go and have some mature discussions with his lawyer, Courtney Smith, but the attorney told the court that they had already discussed the matter and that it was an issue that could be ventilated.
A mention date was then set for December 2 and Robinson’s bail was extended.
