Percy Williams to leave on Friday for Trini assignment
The man known at the ‘gate master’ Percy Williams is expected to depart for Trinidad this Friday to fulfil his riding assignment on Princess Popstar on Saturday, November 29.
Williams was recently asked to ride the Horse of the Year in a nine furlong event dubbed the Caribbean Champion Stakes when he will come up against the likes of the world renowned Frankie Dettori, the former Godolphin stable jockey.
“Yes the plan is to leave here on Friday next for Trinidad to work Princess Popstar on Saturday morning and then to ride her in the race the following Saturday,” Williams who rode Princess Popstar to most of her victories as a two-year-old in 2013 told the Complete Racing Guide after winning on the Philip Feanny trained Campesino on Saturday at Caymanas Park.
Princess Popstar suffered the only defeat inn her career in the Trinidad Derby when ridden by Wilmer Galviz losing to the Triple Crown seeking Momentum another Jamaican bred who has raced only in Trinidad. Since the Trinidad Derby, Princess Popstar has changed stables moving from the barn of John O’Brien to that of conditioner Glen Mendez.
Mendez who was in Jamaica recently for the annual Yearling Sale indicated that Princess Popstar was in fine fettle and he was concentrating on giving her more stamina work.
