Veteran shooter Ziadie top gun at sporting clays tourney
VETERAN shooter Errol Ziadie once again outgunned opponents to shoot to the summit of the Sagicor Investment-sponsored PWD Winter Open Sporting Clays Tournament at the Jamaica Skeet Club (JSC) Range in Portmore on Sunday.
Ziadie shot an impressive 92 out of 100 targets to take the highest overall honours for a second consecutive time. The seasoned campaigner had more to celebrate as his son, Geoffrey Ziadie, took the runner-up spot with 90 hits, and his grandson Zach Lazarus topping both E and Sub-Junior classes with a tally of 84 hits.
Meanwhile, defending champion Shaun Barnes (89) won the A class ahead of Christian Sasso (87) and Brett Thwaites (87) by long-run calculation, while Robert Yap Foo (87) finished just outside of the medals in A class.
Junior shooter Brandon Reid (86) was only one target off the pace, however, but his great score earned him the runner-up spot in the Juniors category.
The closely contested B class was won by Gerry Chin who shot 84 targets, just getting the better of Nickolas Hudson (83) and Metry Seaga (82), who returned with a bang after a long time away from competitive Sporting Clays. Fourteen-year-old Nikolai Clarke posted an amazing score of 89 to take top honours in the C class and Juniors category. Richard Lechler (81) claimed the runner-up spot as well as third position in the Junior division, while Jake Therrien (77) placed third as the C class continues to be dominated by junior shooters.
Clarke’s score would have put him in a shoot-off for pole position in the A class, which speaks volumes about the future of the sport.
Ray McMaster, who shot a score of 80, has been promoted to C after he easily disposed of his opponents in the D class. The Sub-juniors shooters have remained consistent in making the podium, as Danzell Knight (73) took the runner-up spot and third place in the Sub-juniors category, while D’Andre Simpson claimed third place in D class.
Twelve-year-old Zach Lazarus won both the E class and the Sub-junior class with a score of 84, which would have tied for first in B class. Ramon Pitter (80) was placed second, while Luke Chin (74) was second runner-up in the E class and runner-up in the Sub-juniors category. Both Zach and Ramon have now been promoted to D class.
Over in the Hunters class, Wayne Chai Chong (80) came out on top and has been promoted directly to D class with Mark Younis (71) finishing second and has been promoted to E class and Kevin Chin Shue (60) placed third to make a successful return to active competition.
Manchester High School student Alysia Evans (50) improved her previous score to win the Ladies division for the second time in a row, ahead of Leah Azan (39) and Marguerite Harris (31).
