ISSA schoolboy basketball heats up
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending champions Spot Valley High and William Knibb Memorial will put their titles on the line tomorrow in the semi-finals of the ISSA Western Conference high school boys’ basketball competition at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
Under-16 champions Spot Valley High (the fourth seed) will face unbeaten, number one ranked Herbert Morrison Technical at 3:00pm, while national Under-19 champions William Knibb also face Herbert Morrison in the 4:30pm game.
The first finalists will be decided this afternoon when Cornwall College will play St James High in the Under-16 section and unbeaten Muschett High in the Under-19 section.
The semi-final winners will advance to the best of three finals set for December 2, 3 and 8, while the finalists in both sections will qualify for the national play-offs.
Tomorrow, Herbert Morrison will start favourites to win both games, having had the advantage over both Spot Valley and William Knibb so far this season.
While Cornwall College should have the advantage in the Under-16 section against St James in today’s game, Muschett will start favourites to extend their unbeaten run in the Under-19 game.
On Monday, as the first round ended, Muschett hammered Holland High 88-5 in their Under-19 game, while William Knibb beat Cornwall College 69-61.
Obrien Clarke scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds for Muschett, while Lamon Thompson scored 12 points.
At Martha Brae, the home team, held off a hard-charging Cornwall College after opening up a 16 points half-time lead.
William Knibb lead 19-6 and 37-21 after the first two breaks, but Cornwall stormed back to outscore them 40-32 in the second half.
Don-Michael Fray led William Knibb with 34 points.
Daniel Henry scored 22 points and had 13 assists, while Cornwall College was led by Andrew Johnson who scored 20 points and 11 steals; Rashid Davis scored 11 points and Antonio Spence had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
