Taiwan funds projects in rural St Lucia
CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) — Taiwan has made available EC$5.4 million to fund development projects in rural communities across St Lucia.
The disbursement will cover the cost of 52 projects to be undertaken in various communities. So far, 92 projects have been completed under the Community Development Programme (CDP) in 2014.
Ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan), James Chang, said he is pleased that the programme has had the desired impact of improving community infrastructure.
“From time to time I have been told that the volumes using the newly built roads have increased significantly. It is safer for the residents to walk and drive on those roads.
“The farmers are also happy because they can bring their produce to the market quicker and easier than in previous times,” the ambassador said.
Prime Minister Kenny Anthony said the disbursement will assist in rolling out projects for the Christmas season.
“As we approach year end, these projects are indispensable in bringing Christmas cheer to St Lucians, both in terms of the deliverables to the community and the employment generated as a result,” he said.
Anthony said he was pleased that through the continued support of the Government of Taiwan hundreds of St Lucians now enjoy improved access to their homes and better drainage conditions in vulnerable communities.
